Jesus once instructed a man, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” to which he responded, “Who is my neighbor?” Unlike this reluctant man, you act quickly to meet the needs of hurting people!
Just days ago, I visited Western North Carolina (WNC) again, an area hit hard by Hurricane Helene. After forming a relationship with a local church, I talked to Kimberly at a Food Pantry. A single mom of two, she recounted her two main struggles since the storm struck. First, she lost her hair salon business. She had worked hard to gain three certifications to begin the business and was proud of her accomplishment. Now it’s gone. Even though she found part-time work, she was behind in her mortgage payment.
And then there is the grief of sorrow and loss. Like her best friend’s brother, Jimmy. Despite pleas from Jimmy’s family that he remain at home the morning after the hurricane hit, he set walking to check on another friend who lived just a mile away.
He never came back. With the destination in sight, Jimmy stepped onto the bridge. A board gave way and the water covered him. His body was found later trapped under a piece of the bridge that had been swept away.
A listening ear helped Kimberly – a lot. We prayed together. Can that lady ever pray! You also helped her with the late mortgage payment. Thank you! You will be doing more in WNC soon!
Your gifts work in Southeast Asia and Africa to prepare the way of the Lord in people’s lives; you do the same here in the US. Your generosity makes a difference!
