Hardship to Hope: Liu Pursues Her Dream

After the school day, Liu brings her motorbike into her small student room where she studies at night.

Liu has known poverty her whole life. Her father is blind, receiving only $25 per month as a disability payment. Her mother grows yuca and sweet potatoes for the family to eat. Occasionally she finds work as a field laborer during the harvest season. The youngest of seven children, Liu’s siblings have all married and left her hometown.

Liu excelled in high school and dreamed of going to university. For two years after graduation she worked every job she could find to save money and made her way to the city. Her savings were gone during her first semester. Many days she was hungry. She almost gave up and went home--a high risk for abuse or exploitation. You keep Liu in class! Because of you, she has the help she needs to persevere in school and succeed. Every week she meets with a believing mentor who builds into her life. She is honoring your gifts by doing her best!
