You’ve been providing therapy services to 7-year-old Vinh and his twin brother for about four years now. Diagnosed with autism, Vinh had made huge improvements in communication, emotional regulation, and social interactions. Then, his world turned upside down.
When Vinh’s parents decided to divorce, his twin went to live with their mother, while Vinh went to live with their father. Overnight, it seemed as though all of Vinh’s progress evaporated. He was combative, noncommunicative, and self-harming. In the turmoil of his sorrow and frustration, your love wrapped Vinh in understanding, gentle words, and expert care. Therapists found ways to calm Vinh -- making full use of sensory activities that he accepted and enjoyed. He was soothed by overwhelming encouragement and soft words. Slowly, Vinh is coming back.
In addition to the trauma of the divorce and separation from his mother and twin brother, therapists learned that Vinh is most often in the care of his grandmother while his father works. Unfamiliar with the challenges children with autism face, she has judged Vinh to be a difficult, disobedient child. You send help to her as well as therapists who provide resources and advice to help the whole family.
Vinh has a long way to go, but your generous compassion makes sure that he is never alone in the journey.
